Types of

dental bridges

Fixed Bridge

This traditional option may be used when teeth on either side of the gap have already been crowned or have fillings. The bridge consists of one or more replacement teeth (pontics) attached to crowns on the adjacent teeth (abutments). Fixed bridges provide excellent stability and function, with natural-looking aesthetics.

Adhesive "Maryland" Style Bridge

If the teeth on either side of the gap have had little to no treatment, this minimally invasive option is a great solution – we believe in preserving your natural teeth as much as possible. Maryland bridges use wings bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth, requiring minimal preparation of these supporting teeth.

The bridge process

Once the teeth are prepared, our award-winning technician will construct the bridge in our laboratory. Crafted with precision, your dental bridge will blend seamlessly into your smile.

Both types of dental bridge treatments require a second appointment to fit into position permanently. We will show you how to best care for the bridge, and make arrangements for regular dental hygiene reviews to ensure your new smile is in great health!

Step 1

Initial consultation

During your first appointment, we'll assess the gap and adjacent teeth, discuss your options, and help you choose the most appropriate type of bridge. We'll also take any necessary X-rays and impressions for treatment planning.

Step 2

Tooth preparation

For fixed bridges, the abutment teeth are prepared to receive crowns. For Maryland bridges, minimal preparation of the supporting teeth is required. We then take precise digital impressions to ensure your bridge fits perfectly.

Step 3

Temporary bridge

While your custom bridge is being crafted in the laboratory, we may place a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth and maintain appearance.

Step 4

Fitting your bridge

When your custom bridge is ready, you'll return to us in Leamington Spa to have it checked for fit, colour match, and comfort. Once you're completely satisfied, the bridge is permanently cemented or bonded in place.

Step 5

Monitoring and adjustments

During your whitening treatment, we'll schedule check-ins to monitor your progress and address any sensitivity issues that might arise. If needed, we can adjust your treatment protocol to ensure optimal results with minimal discomfort.

Caring for

your dental bridge

With proper care, your dental bridge can provide many years of service:

  • Brush twice daily and floss around and under the bridge using special floss threaders or interdental brushes

  • Attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments

  • Avoid chewing very hard foods with your bridge, particularly if you have a Maryland bridge

FAQs about

dental bridges

How long do dental bridges last?

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, dental bridges typically last 10-15 years or more. Fixed bridges generally have a longer lifespan than Maryland bridges.

Will my dental bridge look natural?

Yes, modern bridges are crafted from high-quality ceramic materials that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Our skilled technician carefully matches the colour, shape, and translucency of your existing teeth for a seamless result.

Is getting a dental bridge painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring you don't feel pain during preparation. Any mild discomfort afterwards is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

Can I eat normally with a dental bridge?

Yes, a dental bridge restores chewing function, allowing you to eat most foods comfortably. However, very sticky or hard foods should be avoided to prevent damage to the bridge.

How long does it take to get a dental bridge?

The process usually requires two to three appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks, depending on the complexity of your case and laboratory fabrication time.

Is a dental implant better than a bridge?

While dental implants are generally considered the gold standard for tooth replacement, bridges offer an excellent alternative when implants aren't suitable due to medical, anatomical, or financial considerations. We'll help you determine the most appropriate option for your specific situation.

What's the difference between a bridge and a partial denture?

A bridge is fixed permanently in your mouth, while a partial denture is removable. Bridges typically offer greater stability and a more natural feel, but partial dentures may be more suitable in certain clinical situations.
