DENTAL CROWNS AND ONLAYS

Restore and reimagine your smile

When a tooth is damaged so that it is beyond a simple filling, or perhaps it is severely discoloured or worn down, a crown or an onlay may be the best restoration.

Crowns replace the full outer covering of the teeth whereas onlays can maximise the amount of tooth tissue already present. With our use of minimally invasive dentistry we prefer onlays where possible.

Dental crowns and onlays can:
  • Restore strength to severely damaged or weakened teeth

  • Enhance appearance with natural-looking materials

  • Protect teeth from further damage or decay

  • Improve function for comfortable eating and speaking

Alison Sethna

Such a warm and welcoming team, both at reception and during the appointments. Dr. Zeeshan explained everything in detail before the procedure and answered all the questions I had. During the procedure they kept checking how I was feeling from time to time, which I appreciated. Very professional work, great team, and no long waits before your appointments. Everyone seems to love working here and it shows, as they all welcome you with a big smile and care about you as a person not only a patient. Very happy to have found The Grove Practice, they are my go to dentist.

Material options

Our experienced Leamington Spa dentists will discuss these options with you, helping you choose the material that best meets your needs in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and durability.

Emax (lithium disilicate)

A highly aesthetic ceramic material that combines excellent strength with natural-looking appearance. Ideal for front teeth and visible areas of the mouth.

Zirconia

An exceptionally strong ceramic material that works well for back teeth where chewing forces are greatest. Modern zirconia restorations offer impressive aesthetics along with outstanding durability.

Gold

Though less commonly chosen for aesthetic reasons, gold remains an excellent material for dental restorations due to its biocompatibility, gentle wear on opposing teeth, and exceptional longevity.

The

crown and onlay process

Step 1

Initial consultation

We'll examine your tooth, take X-rays if needed, and discuss whether a crown or onlay is the most appropriate treatment. We'll also explain material options and what to expect throughout the process.

Step 2

Tooth preparation

After numbing the area, the tooth is carefully prepared by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the restoration. The amount of tooth reduction depends on whether we're placing a crown (more reduction) or an onlay (less reduction).

Step 3

Digital impressions

Using advanced digital scanning technology, we create a precise virtual model of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. This ensures your restoration fits perfectly and functions harmoniously with your bite.

Step 4

Temporary restoration

While your permanent restoration is being crafted by our skilled technician, we'll place a temporary crown or onlay to protect your tooth and maintain appearance and function.

Step 5

Fitting your restoration

When your custom-made restoration is ready (typically within 2 weeks), you'll return to have it permanently cemented. We'll check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure your bite feels comfortable.

Long-term

care and maintenance

With proper care, your crown or onlay can provide many years of service:

  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene, paying special attention to the margin where the restoration meets your natural tooth

  • Attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments

  • Consider wearing a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth

  • Avoid using your teeth as tools or biting very hard objects

FAQs about

Crowns and onlays

How long do crowns and onlays last?

With proper care, crowns and onlays typically last 10-15 years or more. Some materials, particularly gold and high-quality ceramics, can last significantly longer with excellent maintenance.

What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, while a veneer covers only the front surface. Crowns are primarily restorative (though they improve appearance too), whereas veneers are primarily cosmetic.

How do I care for my temporary crown or onlay?

Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods that might dislodge it. Clean gently around the area and avoid flossing directly adjacent to the temporary. Contact us if it becomes loose or uncomfortable.

Can a crowned tooth still get decay?

Yes, decay can develop at the margin where the crown meets the natural tooth. Excellent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent this.

Is the procedure painful?

We use effective local anaesthesia to ensure you're comfortable during preparation. After treatment, some mild sensitivity may occur temporarily, but significant discomfort is rare and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Why choose an onlay instead of a large filling?

Onlays provide greater strength and durability than large fillings, particularly in areas subject to heavy chewing forces. They also seal the tooth more effectively against decay and are less likely to cause cracks in the remaining tooth structure.

Will my crown or onlay look natural?

Yes, modern materials allow us to create restorations that match your natural teeth in colour, translucency, and reflectivity. Our award-winning technician crafts each restoration individually to complement your smile seamlessly.
