Restore and reimagine your smile
When a tooth is damaged so that it is beyond a simple filling, or perhaps it is severely discoloured or worn down, a crown or an onlay may be the best restoration.
Crowns replace the full outer covering of the teeth whereas onlays can maximise the amount of tooth tissue already present. With our use of minimally invasive dentistry we prefer onlays where possible.

What our Warwickshire patients say

Dental crowns
A crown is a restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, providing protection and strength while restoring its shape, size, and appearance. Crowns are recommended when:

Dental onlays
An onlay is a more conservative restoration that covers only the damaged or weakened portions of a tooth, preserving more of your natural tooth structure. Onlays are ideal when:
Emax (lithium disilicate)
A highly aesthetic ceramic material that combines excellent strength with natural-looking appearance. Ideal for front teeth and visible areas of the mouth.
Zirconia
An exceptionally strong ceramic material that works well for back teeth where chewing forces are greatest. Modern zirconia restorations offer impressive aesthetics along with outstanding durability.
Gold
Though less commonly chosen for aesthetic reasons, gold remains an excellent material for dental restorations due to its biocompatibility, gentle wear on opposing teeth, and exceptional longevity.

Crowns and onlays
How long do crowns and onlays last?
With proper care, crowns and onlays typically last 10-15 years or more. Some materials, particularly gold and high-quality ceramics, can last significantly longer with excellent maintenance.
What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, while a veneer covers only the front surface. Crowns are primarily restorative (though they improve appearance too), whereas veneers are primarily cosmetic.
How do I care for my temporary crown or onlay?
Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods that might dislodge it. Clean gently around the area and avoid flossing directly adjacent to the temporary. Contact us if it becomes loose or uncomfortable.
Can a crowned tooth still get decay?
Yes, decay can develop at the margin where the crown meets the natural tooth. Excellent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are essential to prevent this.
Is the procedure painful?
We use effective local anaesthesia to ensure you're comfortable during preparation. After treatment, some mild sensitivity may occur temporarily, but significant discomfort is rare and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Why choose an onlay instead of a large filling?
Onlays provide greater strength and durability than large fillings, particularly in areas subject to heavy chewing forces. They also seal the tooth more effectively against decay and are less likely to cause cracks in the remaining tooth structure.
Will my crown or onlay look natural?
Yes, modern materials allow us to create restorations that match your natural teeth in colour, translucency, and reflectivity. Our award-winning technician crafts each restoration individually to complement your smile seamlessly.
