What our Warwickshire patients say

gum recession
Gum recession occurs when the margin of gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth's root. Common causes include:
Aggressive tooth brushing
Periodontal disease
Genetic predisposition
Hormonal changes
Tobacco use
Teeth grinding or clenching
Misaligned teeth
Poor oral hygiene
Left untreated, recession continues to progress, potentially leading to tooth loss. Early intervention is key to preventing more extensive recession and the need for more complex treatment.

treatment options
At The Grove Practice, Dr Vithlani offers several advanced surgical techniques to treat gum recession:
The most common procedure for root coverage, this involves taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth (or using donor tissue) and securing it over the exposed root surface. This procedure is highly predictable and provides excellent aesthetic results.
Similar to a connective tissue graft but using tissue directly from the palate, this technique is particularly effective for strengthening thin gums and preventing further recession, even if complete root coverage isn't the primary goal.
For suitable cases, this technique uses gum tissue adjacent to the recession, creating a flap that is stretched over the exposed root. This preserves the blood supply to the relocated tissue, enhancing healing and success rates.
A minimally invasive alternative, this approach uses specialised instruments to loosen gum tissue through a small pinhole, which is then guided over the exposed root. This technique avoids the need for donor tissue or incisions in many cases.

Gum recession treatment
Will the treated gums look natural?
Yes, Dr Vithlani uses techniques that provide highly aesthetic results, matching the colour and texture of your natural gum tissue. Most people won't be able to tell you've had gum surgery once healing is complete.
How long is the recovery period?
Most patients can return to normal activities within 24-48 hours, though complete healing takes several weeks. We'll provide detailed instructions to ensure optimal recovery and results.
How long will the results of gum recession treatment last?
With proper maintenance and addressing the original causes of recession, results can be permanent. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular maintenance appointments are essential for long-term success.
Can all types of recession be treated?
Most cases of gum recession can be improved significantly with modern techniques. The degree of improvement depends on several factors, including the severity and location of recession, which Dr Vithlani will discuss during your consultation.
Will my insurance cover gum recession treatment?
Coverage varies by policy. Our team can help you understand your benefits and provide the necessary documentation for insurance claims. We also offer payment plans to make treatment more accessible.
How can I prevent further gum recession?
Using proper brushing technique (gentle but thorough), addressing any grinding or clenching habits, maintaining good gum health through regular professional cleanings, and treating any orthodontic issues can all help prevent additional recession.
Is gum recession treatment painful?
The procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel pain during treatment. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during recovery, which is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
