COmposite BONDING

INSTANT SMILE ENHANCEMENTS IN LEAMINGTON SPA

Modern advances in techniques and materials allows us to use tooth coloured composite restoration materials to sculpt and shape teeth to your desired result. Using this technique of composite bonding, we can make quite amazing changes with no damage or loss of the tooth surface.

Composite bonding can:
  • Fix chips and small cracks in teeth

  • Close gaps between teeth

  • Reshape uneven or short teeth

  • Cover discolouration that doesn't respond to whitening

  • Protect exposed root surfaces caused by gum recession

The composite bonding process

Step 1

Consultation and planning

We'll discuss your goals and examine your teeth to determine if bonding is appropriate for your situation. We may take photographs and create a digital or physical mock-up to help you visualise the potential results.

Step 2

Shade selection

We'll carefully select the composite shade that best matches your natural teeth or, if you've recently had whitening, complements your brightened smile.

Step 3

Preparation

The tooth surface is lightly etched and coated with a bonding agent to create a strong attachment point for the composite material. Unlike veneers or crowns, bonding typically requires no removal of healthy tooth structure.

Step 4

Application and shaping

The dentist applies the composite material in layers, shaping it to achieve the desired form and contour. Each layer is hardened with a special light before the next is applied.

Step 5

Finishing and polishing

Once the shaping is complete, we meticulously finish and polish the bonded surfaces to create a natural lustre that matches your surrounding teeth. The final result should be virtually indistinguishable from your natural tooth structure.

Uses of

composite bonding

We also use cosmetic bonding as a way of assessing cosmetic changes with veneers or crowns before embarking on the full treatment. It allows us to be able to show you what the finished result may look like.

Closing gaps

Small to moderate spaces between teeth can be closed by adding material to the sides of the adjacent teeth, creating a more uniform appearance without orthodontic treatment.

Repairing chips and fractures

Chips and small fractures can be seamlessly repaired, restoring both aesthetics and protecting the tooth from further damage.

Reshaping teeth

Teeth that are slightly misaligned, too short, or irregularly shaped can be contoured to create a more harmonious smile.

Masking Discolouration

Stains that don't respond to whitening can be covered with a thin layer of composite, creating a more uniform colour.

Trial smile

Before committing to permanent veneers or crowns, bonding can create a "trial smile" that lets you test drive your new look and make adjustments before proceeding with longer-term restorations.

Caring for

bonded teeth

With proper care, cosmetic bonding can last 5-7 years before needing touch-ups or replacement:

  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing

  • Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens, or fingernails

  • If you grind or clench your teeth, consider wearing a night guard

  • Attend regular dental check-ups to monitor the condition of your bonding

  • Be aware that composite can stain over time, so limiting coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco can help maintain appearance

  • Periodic professional repolishing maintains your composite's stain resistance and natural shine

FAQs about

cosmetic bonding

Is the cosmetic bonding procedure painful?

No, cosmetic bonding is typically painless and rarely requires anaesthesia. Since little or no tooth structure is removed, the procedure is comfortable for most patients.

Can damaged bonding be repaired?

Yes, one advantage of composite bonding is that it can be easily repaired or adjusted if damaged or if you're not completely satisfied with the appearance. Small repairs can usually be done quickly without needing to replace the entire bonding.

How long does cosmetic bonding take?

Most bonding procedures can be completed in a single appointment lasting 30-60 minutes per tooth. More extensive cases involving multiple teeth to us in Leamington Spa may require longer appointments or be divided into several visits.

What's the difference between bonding and veneers?

Bonding uses composite resin applied directly to the teeth, while veneers are thin porcelain shells crafted in a laboratory and bonded to the teeth. Veneers are more durable and stain-resistant but require more tooth preparation and are more expensive.

Can bonded teeth be whitened?

Composite material doesn't respond to whitening treatments. If you're planning to whiten your teeth, it's best to do so before bonding so the composite can be matched to your whitened teeth.

How long does cosmetic bonding last?

With proper care, cosmetic bonding typically lasts 5-7 years before requiring touch-ups or replacement. Bonding is not as durable as porcelain veneers or crowns but offers the advantages of being less expensive and more conservative.

How much does cosmetic bonding cost?

Bonding is generally one of the most affordable cosmetic dental treatments. The cost varies depending on the number of teeth treated and the complexity of the case. During your consultation, we'll provide detailed pricing information.
