ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Gentle Root Canal Care for Lasting Relief

Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is a highly effective procedure to save teeth that have become infected or severely damaged in the pulp – the soft inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Despite its reputation, modern root canal therapy is a comfortable procedure that relieves pain rather than causing it.

At The Grove Practice in Leamington Spa, our experienced dentists use advanced techniques and technology to provide gentle, effective root canal treatment, saving teeth that might otherwise require extraction.

Root canal treatment can:
  • Relieve dental pain caused by infected or inflamed pulp

  • Save natural teeth from extraction and preserve your smile

  • Prevent infection spread to other areas of your mouth or body

  • Restore normal biting function and sensation

The

root canal process

Step 1

Comprehensive assessment

We begin with a thorough examination, including X-rays, to determine whether root canal treatment is necessary and assess the extent of infection or damage.

Step 2

Comfortable procedure

After administering local anaesthetic to ensure you're completely numb, we:

1. Create a small access opening in the crown of your tooth
2. Remove the infected or inflamed pulp tissue
3. Clean, shape, and disinfect the root canals
4. Fill and seal the canals with a biocompatible material
5. Place a temporary filling to protect the tooth

Step 3

Final restoration

After root canal treatment, a crown or other restoration is usually placed to protect the tooth and restore its full function. This is typically done in a separate appointment.

Post-treatment

care and success

After your root canal treatment, we'll provide detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients return to normal activities the day after treatment, with any minor discomfort easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

With proper restoration and regular dental care, a tooth treated with root canal therapy can last a lifetime. Success rates for root canal treatment are very high, with most studies showing 85-97% of treated teeth remaining functional for many years.

FAQs about

Root canal treatment

Is root canal treatment painful?

Modern root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Effective anaesthesia ensures you won't feel pain during the procedure, and most patients report dramatic pain relief once the infected pulp is removed.

Will I need a crown after root canal treatment?

In most cases, yes. Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are more brittle and susceptible to fracture. A crown or onlay provides necessary protection and restores full functionality.

What happens if I don't get a root canal when needed?

Without treatment, the infection will continue to spread, causing increased pain and potentially leading to abscess formation. Eventually, the tooth will likely need to be extracted, which can create additional problems like shifting teeth and bite issues.

How many appointments will I need?

Most root canal treatments can be completed in one or two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case and whether there's active infection present. Each appointment typically lasts 60-90 minutes.

Is extraction a better alternative to root canal treatment?

Saving your natural tooth through root canal treatment is almost always preferable to extraction. Natural teeth provide better function, require less maintenance, and help preserve bone structure in your jaw.

Can root canal treatment fail?

While success rates are high, some treatments may not resolve the infection completely or new infections can develop. Signs of a failed root canal include persistent pain, swelling, or a return of symptoms. Re-treatment or other procedures can usually address these issues.

How can I prevent the need for root canal treatment?

Regular dental check-ups, prompt treatment of decay or damage, wearing a mouthguard during sports, and avoiding chewing on hard objects can all reduce your risk of needing root canal therapy.
